What is a CSA?

CSABox
So what is this crazy acronym and why do I need it?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. In a nutshell: a CSA is a “family” of those who have pledged to support local farm operations. When members agree to join, they receive a share of produce on a regular basis throughout the growing season for which they’ve paid into. Basically you pay for your “share” up front at the beginning of the season and in turn you get a box of delicious fruits and vegetables. The idea behind the model is this: it provides healthy, economical and fresh produce, while keeping it local and community oriented.

The sooner you eat something after it has been harvested, the better it is for you nutritionally. Think of food as a bouquet of flowers. After they are cut they start to die. As soon as your food is harvested it starts to die too, so the goal is to get it to you as fast as possible. Supermarket fruits and vegetables can take sometimes weeks to arrive to the shelves and often have traveled hundreds of miles to get to you. So why would you get your produce from across the country when you can get it freshly harvested from your hometown instead? Good question!

Our modern culture (especially here in San Diego) seriously lacks community. We often live in a house, on a street full of people, in a neighborhood full of people we don’t know. But there is one thing we all have in common – we like to eat! Our goal is to connect people through food. We want you to get to know us, and we want to get to know you. In turn you will get to know each other.

We have a passion for people and a passion for food. The combination, through a lot of hard work, creates a environment where people can be confident in the quality of the food they eat, and feel a connection to it. Food is the means to stay alive; lets make it count.

The concept of a CSA has been around for a long time and we are by no means doing something that hasn’t been done already. Our goal is to stay a small family farm and grow the best fruits and vegetables our hands and God will allow. We are simply a local farm wishing to feed our community. We can’t possibly make a dent in servicing San Diego – our county is huge. And nor do we want to. We’d like to completely focus on staying small, staying involved and farming with integrity. One of our goals is to have our community experience our farm themselves. We want to have community workshops, “pizza and a pint” CSA pickup days, a thriving farm stand, and so much more.

So we challenge you with this: get to know your food!
